Timaru, located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is a charming coastal town known for its relaxed vibe, historic architecture, and easy access to nature.
Overlooking the picturesque Caroline Bay, one of the few urban beaches in the country, Timaru offers a mix of seaside tranquillity and cultural gems.
You can stroll along the bay’s boardwalk, visit the Aigantighe Art Gallery (home to a notable collection of New Zealand and international art), or explore the South Canterbury Museum to learn about the region’s rich Māori and settler history.
Timaru is also the birthplace of Phar Lap, the legendary racehorse, proudly commemorated with a bronze statue.
With its nearby walking trails, boutique shops, and cafes, plus penguin sightings at dusk, Timaru makes a great stop on any South Island road trip and a peaceful alternative to the busier tourist towns.

Trailer hire available for additional luggage requirements. This can hold up to 12 suitcases and costs $30 NZD per day.
