Waipara Winery Tour from Christchurch: A Private Day Out for Small and Large Groups

4 min read

Every wine trip has the same awkward question: who’s driving?

Someone ends up sipping sparkling water while everyone else enjoys the Pinot Noir. Or you book a set-timetable tour, share the day with strangers, and leave each winery just as the conversation gets good.

There’s a better way to see Waipara. A private chauffeur takes the driving, the parking and the clock-watching off your plate. That’s true whether you’re a couple celebrating an anniversary or a group of twenty-odd friends, colleagues or wedding guests.

Why Waipara is worth the trip

Waipara Wine Valley sits about 45 minutes north of Christchurch and is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing wine regions. The warm, dry climate and limestone-rich soils suit Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay, and the cellar doors are the kind where you can taste properly, ask questions and stay for lunch.

It’s close enough for an easy day trip and far enough to feel like a proper escape from the city.

A day for small groups or large groups

Pricing is per vehicle, not per person, so the day works for any group size.

Small groups (couples, friends, small families): travel in a Mercedes-Benz chauffeur car with a private, relaxed feel. It’s ideal for anniversaries, birthdays, visitors from overseas, or a client lunch with a few guests.

Large groups (hens, birthdays, work parties, wedding guests, tour groups): we match the vehicle to your numbers, so everyone travels together rather than splitting across cars and arguing over who’s driving. Per-vehicle pricing also makes it easy to split the cost, and a bigger group means a lower cost per person.

Whichever you are, the day is yours. You choose the wineries, the pace and the pick-up time.

The wineries you can choose from

You pick three from the following:

  • Pegasus Bay: a relaxed, sit-down deli selection with award-winning wines.

  • George Road Wines: a boutique vineyard with approachable tastings in a casual setting, and a restaurant on site.

  • Greystone: farm-to-table dining alongside organic wines.

  • Black Estate: a top-rated restaurant with views, serving seasonal dishes with handcrafted wines.

  • Terrace Edge: a family-owned vineyard focused on sustainability, offering intimate tastings only (no restaurant).

Planning for a large group?

Some of these wineries have restaurants, so we recommend booking your lunch early and telling us your numbers. We’ll help plan the timing so your group isn’t waiting for a table.

How the day works

  1. Pick-up: we collect you from your home, hotel or office in inner Christchurch. We recommend an 11:00 start, and the time is flexible.

  2. The drive: about 45 minutes north with a local driver who knows the roads and the valley.

  3. The wineries: we suggest around four hours, allowing time for lunch and tastings. Extra hours can be added.

  4. Lunch and tastings: paid directly at the wineries (from about $15 per head), so you only pay for what you choose.

  5. The ride home: your chauffeur takes you back to the door. Nobody needs to count their glasses.

One honest note: our vehicles aren’t licensed to carry or consume alcohol, so any bottles you buy are best packed away for later, and drivers may decline to carry passengers who are intoxicated. It’s a sensible rule for a safe day out.

  • The right vehicle for your group. From a premium Mercedes-Benz for a couple to larger vehicles for bigger parties.

  • Flexible itinerary. Choose your wineries and your pace, and add hours if the day is going well.

  • Experienced local chauffeurs. Our drivers are suited, professional and know Canterbury well. We’ve been operating in New Zealand since 2015.

  • Everyone relaxes. There’s no designated driver and no stress about the drive home.

Tips for your Waipara day

  • Book lunch early. Restaurant tables can fill, especially at weekends and in summer, and larger groups need more notice.

  • Tell us your group size. It helps us recommend the right vehicle and the best mix of wineries.

  • Bring layers. Canterbury weather can change quickly, even in summer.

  • Pace yourselves. Three wineries and a proper lunch is plenty.
